Get Trellis on your phone.

Your subjects, notes and deadlines, on the device you actually carry. Android gets the app. iPhone gets the website, added to the Home Screen.

Android

Install the app

Android 7.0 or newer. It works without signal: writing a note, ticking off a deadline, reviewing a card and running the study timer all happen on the phone, and go up when you are next connected.

Then

Open the file when it lands — from the download bar, or from Downloads.
Android will say it does not normally allow installs from here. Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, and come back. You are giving that permission to your browser, once.
Tap Install, then Open.
Sign in with the account you made on the website.

Why not the Play Store? Trellis is not listed there yet. Installing a file directly is an ordinary thing to do on Android, and it is what the Play Store itself does at the end — the difference is that Google has not reviewed this one, so you are trusting us rather than them. If that is not a trade you want to make, the iPhone instructions below work on Android too: open the site in Chrome and add it to your Home Screen.

Already have the older Trellis app, the one that opened the website inside a frame? Uninstall it first, or Android will refuse to install over it. Nothing is lost — your work lives in your account, not on the phone.

iPhone & iPad

Add it to your Home Screen

There is no App Store version. Apple lets a website be installed like an app instead, and Trellis is built to be one: it gets its own icon, opens full screen with no address bar, and can send you reminders.

In Safari

Open trellis-notes.com in Safari. This part matters — Chrome and Firefox on iPhone cannot do the next step properly.
Tap Share: the square with an arrow coming out of the top, at the bottom of the screen.
Scroll the list and tap Add to Home Screen.
Tap Add. The icon appears with your other apps.

Open it from that icon from now on, rather than from Safari. It is the same account and the same notes either way, but only the icon version counts as a real app as far as iOS is concerned — which is what the next two lists are about.

What you get

✓ Notes, subjects, the schedule, the calendar, flashcards, grades, Islands and study groups. The whole app.
✓ Ask Trellis, and everything it can do for you.
✓ Your notes readable with no signal, and edits you make offline sent when you are back.
✓ Reminders, on iOS 16.4 and later, and only once it is on your Home Screen. Turn them on in Settings inside the app.
✓ Attaching a photo or a PDF to a note.

What you do not

— Photographing a timetable to fill in your schedule, and photographing a page straight into a note. Both are in the Android app only.
— Working offline beyond your notes. On Android everything but the four things below keeps going with no signal; here it is your notes.

iOS clears stored data for websites you have not opened in a while. Adding Trellis to the Home Screen is what exempts it, which is a second reason to do that rather than bookmark it.

What needs a connection

In the Android app, four things, and they are the four that cannot be anywhere but a server: Ask Trellis, photographs, the group board and class packs. Signing in for the first time needs one too. Everything else — writing, reading, ticking off, reviewing, the timer — is yours on the phone, and the app says when something is still waiting to be sent rather than pretending it has gone.
